Zone 0 Ember-Resistant Clearing

Zone 0 — CAL FIRE’s Ember-Resistant Zone — is the newest and most important part of defensible space: the first 5 feet around your home. Wind-driven embers can travel up to a mile ahead of a fire and ignite what’s against the house, so this band matters most. The rule phases in through 2027. We clear the 0–5 ft zone to ember-resistant standards and document the work.

Defensible space

The three zones

San Diego County’s 100 feet of defensible space is split into three CAL FIRE zones, each with its own standard — we clear and document all of them. In San Diego County, Zones 1 and 2 are 50 feet each.
