Defensible space (Zones 0–2)California’s new Zone 0 ember-resistant requirement covers the 0–5 ft band right against your home — the area most house fires start. It phases in through 2027.
Zone 0 ember-resistant clearingZone 0 (0–5 ft) ember-resistant, Zone 1 (5–30 ft) lean and clean, and Zone 2 (30–100 ft) reduced fuel. Together they form the 100 feet the county requires.
