Defensible Space, Explained

The rules that affect North County homeowners — in plain English, with no scare tactics.

The 100-foot rule

San Diego County requires 100 feet of defensible space around homes in fire-prone areas. That space is split into zones, each with its own clearing standard.

Defensible space (Zones 0–2)

Zone 0 (the first 5 feet)

California’s new Zone 0 ember-resistant requirement covers the 0–5 ft band right against your home — the area most house fires start. It phases in through 2027.

Zone 0 ember-resistant clearing

The three defensible-space zones

Zone 0 (0–5 ft) ember-resistant, Zone 1 (5–30 ft) lean and clean, and Zone 2 (30–100 ft) reduced fuel. Together they form the 100 feet the county requires.

Why insurers are inspecting

Insurers are inspecting properties and declining to renew policies that don’t meet defensible-space standards. Documented clearance helps you keep coverage.
